Good Place To Start...

For those of you that are reading this that don't know me, my name is Bethan Trevett. I've written blogs about working and volunteering abroad in the past, but this time I'll be focussing on, not just the trip, but getting there too.

My friend and housemate Kathryn Reynolds (Fran, to those that know her) introduced me to the British Exploring Society (BES). After reading about the society and what they do, I chose to apply for the Peruvian Amazon expedition 2015 with her, having always wanted to visit South America!

The trip will start out in Cusco, Peru before crossing the Andes into Manu National Park. Whilst there, we'll be trekking through the jungle, undertaking scientific and conservation projects. We'll be working with the CREES Foundation, assisting them with studies and exploring new areas, gathering data on the flora and fauna, as well as looking into the forest wildlife!

This is completely different from anything I've ever done before and I'm really excited! I've always been interested in conservation and sustainability, and this gives me the opportunity to learn more on the subject and pass the knowledge on post-expedition!

But first, I need to get there... I'm no stranger to fundraising, but the expedition is in July (date TBC) and payment deadlines are even sooner. I have a few plans to raise money. From music events to cake sales, but of course, I need the aid and generosity of others! So this is me asking for help: time or money, absolutely anything will be greatly appreciated. I'll be documenting our progress on here.

To start it off, I've stopped smoking, which is saving a hell of a lot of money. I'm also picking up more hours in my jobs. I work as a bartender in a Caribbean bar and lounge (Irie's) full time, and I also have a part-time job in a pub/hotel (The Glengower Hotel). So, when the next paycheck comes in, I'll be reaping the benefits of working 50+ hours a week. But I still have time to pick up any odd jobs that might be available, with all money going towards the expedition. If anyone has any cleaning/painting/gardening/dog-walking/cat-sitting that needs doing, just get in touch! Details of the next fundraising plan are in the pipeline. Watch this space!
